Member-only story
Check yourself and the choir
Chatting with people who affirmatively nod and back your play all the time sounds lovely. It empowers and emboldens you. Everything you say and do is one hundred percent correct. Is that true? Well, you don’t really know. You supply the choir with robes, music, musicians and rehearsal space. You feed them and book the concerts which makes you great?! Really? Are you sure? What if you are tone deaf? What if the choir is tone deaf? What if the musicians are spectacular, but since you write their check, they say nothing about the overall performance. What if some of the choir members are vegetarians and you’ve been serving them meat? But your check clears, so they suffer in silence or create dissension. You’re too busy in front, basking in the spotlight to notice what’s happening in the shadows.
It’s time to evaluate yourself and the choir. Flip a coin, but make the decision to listen to your members and make some changes. Listen to yourself, find someone you trust, outside of the choir that will survey you. You will find that the changes will strengthen you and the resulting sounds will be refreshing and enable participation from potential new members.
